Cycling Around India...

Incredible India! Indeed it seems to be, a country that conjures up exotic and colourful images. Home to some of the world’s highest mountains, and longest beaches, as well as deserts and deep jungles where wild elephants, tigers and rhinos roam. Add to this its people - a culture that is considered to be amongst the world's oldest, richest and most diverse, and a history that has amongst other things given birth to enthralling temples, palaces, forts and memorials, and yes, it sounds the perfect country to explore – and what better way to discover the magic of India than by bicycle!

Today India has one of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies with modern 21st century cities, home to some of the wealthiest people on earth. Add to this the Bollywood glitz and glamour and it is easy to forget, or not realise, that India still has extreme levels of poverty with its associated problems.

Cycling 20,000km around India, following its coastline and land borders as closely as possible is indeed a challenge, one which few people have or will achieve. However, I (Mark Ellison) have committed myself to taking on this challenge. Whilst being a personal achievement I feel that it would be a waste not to use this opportunity to raise much needed funds for those in Indian society who are living in real hardship through no fault of their own. As I will be cycling through many poor communities it seems only fair that my cycle around India challenge should give something back to them. Thus I have decided to use the India cycle ride as a ‘hook’ where those more fortunate can ‘hang’ their generous and much appreciated donations.

After much consideration I have chosen to raise funds for the Mijwan Welfare Society. The Society was founded in 1993 by the late Indian poet Kaifi Azmi and it aims to empower locals from Mijwan, a small village in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh (Northern India). Kaifi’s daughter and Bollywood legend Shabana Azmi has continued her father's visionary work and the Mijwan Welfare Society is going from strength to strength, in no small part due to generous donations.

I intend on starting the cycle around India challenge in January 2012 and I estimate it will take around 10 to 12 months to complete the approx. 20,000km. I am currently busy planning this epic adventure and working on my fitness! Any equipment donations, as well as fundraising pledges are very welcomed, as is any other assistance you feel you can provide. Day 6: Harnai to Jaigad (7-1-12) 96km

27 January, 2012

After a farewell coffee with Mr & Mrs Ashok, with Mrs Ashok assuring me there was a ferry at Dabhol, there I was back on the road at 7.30 in the morning spinning along the flat coastal road with great views out to sea and once again the cloudless blue skies. My legs were feeling [...]

Day 5: Harnai Rest Day (6-1-12)

24 January, 2012

My first rest day, a little earlier than I had planned due to having to try and come up with a more lasting solution to the small tear I found in my rear tyre yesterday that resulted in two punctures. However I, and certainly my legs, are not complaining, after 322 tough kilometres it is [...]
