Cycling Around India - The Route...

The aim when doing my cycle around India challenge is to follow the country’s coast and land borders as close as practically possible. In order to achieve this more often than not I will be cycling along small side roads. This suits me for various reasons, firstly there will be less traffic, secondly I will cycle through interesting small villages and attractive countryside, and thirdly I will get to experience the real essence of India, away from the more ‘commercialised’ and ‘standardised’ highways.

Below is a map of my latest proposed route. This is certainly not cast in stone as I am still doing route research. Any comments on my proposed India cycle route are most welcomed…

The plan is to start cycling from Mumbai and head south following the coast through the state of Maharashtra, and then continuing on through the states of Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and reaching India’s most southerly point, Kanyakumari, in Tamil Nadu state. Then turning north and cycling through the coastal states of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal. From here things get really interesting as I turn east and cycle into the oft forgotten states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim (here government permits are required to gain access!). Continuing west I will cycle across the extremely challenging and mountainous ‘Roof of India’ passing through the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir (including the town of Leh at an altitude of 3,505m [10,500ft] and arguably the world's highest motorable pass Khardung La at 5,359m [17,615ft]. Heading south (and downhill) once again I will cycle through Punjab state before experiencing the deserts of Rajasthan. Then the last state of my great India cycle challenge, Gujarat. After which I will re-enter Maharashtra and cycle back into Mumbai for the culmination of an extraordinary cycle ride around India...
